Yep… it’s time for Yes Ma’am Presents.

Yes Ma'am Presents - April 2012Most of you know the drill by now. I grab the Yes Ma’am Poster Girl “Genevieve Chadwick” (unless she’s on tour), book another couple of awesome female-fronted acts and voila, the Broadway Lounge is packed with friendly punters consumed in the magic of music!

Genevieve ChadwickThis month will be no different with Genevieve headlining the bill with a passionate and powerful solo performance. She lived up to her reputation for captivating audiences with her punchy stage presence at the recent Blue Mountains Music Festival. So much so, she had a sizeable queue trying to squeeze into her second show. I vacated the room to avoid feeling guilty about taking up a space that could otherwise be filled by a craving newbie Chadwick fan. I’m sure they were appreciative.

All of you roots/rock fans will be especially pleased to hear that Two Girls Will are planning to deliver a gutsy set. I’ve seen this young talented act a number of times and they just seem to get better and better. Acoomplished muso’s, they’ll mix it up with their instrument swaps and get you shaking that booty.

Two Girls WillAnd as mentioned previously on my blog, I love to introduce you to a new act whenever possible. Allow me to introduce you to a woman of great soul and strength: Chrystal. A spiritual quester,  she is true to her name and her soul and spirit channel her amazing music. Chrystal has an astounding vocal range and control, and a jazz timbre which could melt Himalayan peaks, lyrics that touch you in the deepest places, and a talent for groove which gives her music feet and wings. She is a great arranger and composer of multi-layered harmonies, strings, guitars, bass and drums with a warm yet assertive edge for leading a band. She also comes highly recommended by a music pal who is more discerning than most! Chrystal will get the vibe going with the a solo set to start the event.

It’s always nice to let you know that it’s free entry and that you have more pocket money to spend on CD’s, food and drinks.

7pm Wed 19th April, The Broadway Lounge, 166 Broadway, Chippendale

Blais has 3 previous full-length studio releases, and is eager to launch her newest highly anticipated record. She will be performing as a 3-piece band at our very own YES MA’AM PRESENTS strumming Australia’s own Cole Clark Guitars, who endorsed the young singer following her Australian tour last Fall. Blais has had a nice write up in LoTL and smashed the recent “A Chicks With Picks Extravaganza” with a dashing final soloists set. Click here for new clip!

Known faves and something new and enticing for the Feb bill!

We can never go past favourites like the rockin’ roots soul of GENEVIEVE CHADWICK and the tender melodic eloquence of Su Blu, but I like to mix up the monthly Yes Ma’am nights with acts that you may not know yet but really, truly should!

Enter Hucker + bird. These lovely ladies sent me through a “not yet finished” song and it totally sucked me in. Described as “Hailing from Melbourne and Sydney Hucker +bird unite creating magical harmonies, unforgettable melodies and general cuteness. They will take you on a toe tapping, easy listening, story laden adventure that you’ll want to go on again and again. Gearing up to release their debut EP this is a duo is one to keep your eye on.” But even better still, we’re getting a band slot from them to end yet another sensational night of live, original music.

Usual deal: free entry, drinks and delish meals and snacks available from the friendliest bar staff in Sydney!

Ready for 2012? We are rearing to go!!

What better way to start a new year than by heading down to the Broadway Lounge for two of Sydney’s finest female fronted acts, Sepora + Hannah & Josh supporting Festival great: Genevieve Chadwick!

Genevieve Chadwick doesn’t need introducing to most of you. She is renowned for blowing away the entire bar, save for a couple of bottles of whisky on the top shelf. One woman on a stage with simply stunning guitar manoeuvres, hauntingly powerful vocals and all the while captivating the audience with her charismatic star presence. It is no wonder that she’ll be fresh from major festivals including Woodford Folk Festival – the largest of its’ kind in Oz when she hits the Broadway Lounge!

Sepora [n.] “The songsmith and front woman of Sydney based alternative-pop outfit that have moved audiences since August 2009.” Noted for her unique vocal tone and sound, Sepora cut her teeth playing acoustic solo shows throughout Sydney’s Inner West before launching her full backing band at Sydney’s notable ‘Pop Tarts’ collective in 2009.  In December 2010, Sepora unofficially released a limited-edition live recording known as ‘The Paper Bag’ EP, containing 4 of her original tracks, and one bonus cover track. With a style that falls under the large umbrella of alternative-pop, this fiery songstress is preparing to enter pre-production for her debut album. Winner of the first Chick Boom Competition held in 2011, this is an act you need to know about if you like your music tight, sexy and sultry.

‘One of the most unfathomable concepts of a brother and a sister getting on so well to the point of wanting to work closely together, can now be wintessed in the music-creating sibling duo that is ‘Hannah and Josh’. Between goofy (and twin-like) smiles, these siblings perform outrageously well together, putting on a tight and professional show, whilst maintaining their trademark chilled out attitude. Think catchy enough to be pop, raw enough to be folk and yet talented enough to be session musicians in their own right, these siblings will blow your mind and keep even the nail on your left pinkie finger entertained the whole night long.
Usual deal, free entry and food, beverages and friendly bar staff waiting at your service!

We don’t need an excuse to get festive!

We’ve had many a pumping night of quality live music by female fronted acts and December is no different. Blues/roots fave poster girl “Genevieve Chadwick” will be joined by the divine “Maxine Kauter Band” and acoustic aviator “Pilot Darcy” for the last YMP for 2011.

As many of you already know, it has been a big year for Genevieve Chadwick blitzing many a festival show including Sydney Blues Festival, Bendigo Blues Festival and Woodford Folk Festival just around the corner. We’re always stoked when Gen is in town in time for a YES MA’AM PRESENTS and she’s ready to heat up the vibe for the December edition.

Another act I have been dying to get on the bill is the exquisite Maxine Kauter Band. These guys won me over at first sight at my local, Beach Road Hotel, years ago. They have since stunned my musical pants offa me at the Chick Boom Band Comp and other gigs around town that I’ve managed to catch. Being a huge lover of Neko Case, dexterous double bass and driving rhythms, MKB have all the finest ingredients in my mind making them one of Sydney’s top alternative acts.

Last but not least, acoustic soloist, Pilot Darcy will share some of her gorgeous songs, sung complete with heavenly vocals and interspersed with delicate rhythms to soothe even the most weary Christmas shopper. Her obscure commentaries in amidst her melodies will no doubt leave you laughing and feeling a little grateful for your extra luck in the sanity department!

And of course, it’s my birthday drinks. Yes Ma’am, it’s true, so another excuse to come on down, take advantage of the “no door charge policy” and eat, drink and be merry as the festive season approaches!

New faces and known faves.

The month of October sees “Yes Ma’am Presents” showcasing some more well known Sydney performers “Hannah Matysek”, “Su Blu” and “Rani’s Fire” and also something special with Central Coast based singer/songwriter “Ange Murphy” driving down to share her talents.

Hannah Matysek performs with professionalism and power, delivering original and quality songs that connect with audiences from various walks of life. Fringing on the border of the commercial music scene, yet maintaining a uniqueness in style and sound, Hannah has cativated audiences at the Sydney Opera House earlier this year and continues to do so with a sling of regular gigs around Sydney.

Su Blu really made her mark when “The Ooh Song” was released as the premier track on the “Chicks With Picks” compilation 2 years ago. Her music is a bittersweet foray down a winding path of folk, blues and gypsy jazz. Conjuring melodies that will make even the most rigid of wallflowers ease back into their seats, and with a slew of state-wide gigs beneath her belt, Su Blu has unassumingly amassed the appreciation of fellow musicians, gig-goers and cafe crowds since 2006 with her quiet charm and captivating melodies.

Rani’s Fire is a Sydney based contemporary alternative  acoustic rock act.  Rani will take you to a magical innocent , quirky and cheeky place with her songs, music and lyrics.  Rani’s Fire has earthy roots and this element is definitely transposed throughout the music. The debut album From the Left Side was released in late 2010, produced by Patrick Nellestein, and is beautiful balance between simplicity and dramatic intensity with elements of folk, blues, and rock. With smooth lyrical melodies Rani’s Fire,  raw and acoustic or in a full band sound is a performance you will enjoy.

From the heart Ange Murphy writes about life and her own experiences, thoughts and things around her. Her music is warm and vibrant, pure and natural. From the first time you hear Ange sing you will be wanting more…her sound draws deep on natural beauty which is intimate and personal.

Influences include: Kasey Chambers, Missy Higgins, Cyndi Lauper, The Cranberries, The Waifs, Brandy Carlile, Oh Laura, Kate Nash.
